Enter a date on either side. Uses the standard tabular (civil) Islamic calendar — the same base used across most calendar software — with an adjustable day offset below, since your local sighting announcement may fall a day earlier or later.

Gregorian → Hijri

Hijri → Gregorian

Some countries confirm the new Hijri month a day earlier or later than this calculation. If your local announcement differs, set that here — it applies across the whole site.

Why dates drift

The Islamic calendar, explained

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar counts from the Hijrah — the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which marks year 1 AH. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, it's purely lunar: twelve months of 29 or 30 days each, with no leap month added to keep it aligned to the seasons.

That makes a Hijri year about 354 days — roughly eleven days shorter than a Gregorian year. So the Hijri date at any fixed point in the Gregorian calendar, like 1 January, keeps sliding earlier every year. The strip on the right shows exactly that: which Hijri month 1 January falls in, year after year.
