Calculating where Ramadan falls this year…

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Hijri calendar and the month the Qur'an describes as when its revelation began. Observant Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib) — abstaining from food, drink, and other daytime obligations of the fast — and the pre-dawn meal, suhoor, and the sunset meal that breaks the fast, iftar, mark the two ends of each day.

Why the countdown moves each year

Because the Hijri calendar is lunar, Ramadan begins about eleven days earlier each Gregorian year, cycling slowly through every season over roughly three decades. The exact start date is confirmed by moon sighting in each country — see the events page for this year's estimate.
